Laurie Cousins has a B.A. in Psychology, is a Certified Mindfulness Teacher through UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center, a trained Mindfulness-based Interventionist of Mindfulness-based Relapse Prevention, and a Mindful Self-Compassion teacher through UCSD’s Center for Mindfulness. Laurie specializes in trauma recovery and is a certified Community Resiliency Model Teacher and somatically trained in levels 1 & 2 for Trauma Resiliency Model through the Trauma Resource Institute. She has certification for Advanced Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness by Dr. David Treleaven and is a Certified Echo Trauma-Informed Nonviolent Parent Educator.
For several years she worked as a research associate at UCLA’s Child & Adolescent Mood Disorders Program facilitating Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy groups for research studies with teens and college students. Laurie is the co-creator and facilitator, along with Dr. Danielle Denenny, of the Mindful Parenting Support Study program that offers psychoeducational resources and mindfulness-based practices for parents of children with mood disorders.
Laurie is mentored by Susan Kaiser Greenland, founder of the Inner Kids program, and is one of her lead teachers bringing mindful awareness and compassion into education in a secular way for youth, teachers, and administrators in K-12 public and private schools throughout Los Angeles. She also is a founding member and teacher for the online Inner Kids Collaborative. Laurie created the Unplug Kids mindfulness program at Unplug Meditation Studio where she worked with kids, families, and parents through class series, workshops, and private sessions.
Being a mother of two incredible teenagers herself, Mindful Parenting is a true passion and specialty for Laurie. She enjoys working with parents and caregivers individually and teaching at many schools throughout Los Angeles. Since 2015, Laurie has the honor of being the in-house Mindful Parenting Facilitator for Campbell Hall School in Studio City, where she leads a weekly mindful parenting group for their families throughout the school year.
As a Mindfulness-based Teacher and Nonviolent Parent Educator, Laurie provides effective strategies and support for families dealing with attentional, behavioral, and emotional challenges, while cultivating a more connected and peaceful home. She creates a customized support plan that includes mindfulness and somatic-based practices and parent-focused educational tools for each family to best serve their unique needs and interests. Laurie has a private practice in Studio City and helps youth, parents, and families reduce stress, cultivate connection, and build resiliency.
Since 2018, the Wolf Connection has been a true refuge for Laurie. She enjoys various roles as a tour host, lead program facilitator for their human empowerment programs and has the deep honor and privilege of caring for these majestic wolves & wolfdogs. With the connection of their innate wisdom, Laurie helps guide at-risk populations through a magical journey of healing and self-empowerment through Wolf Therapy, exploration in Nature, and heart-based connection.
Known for her work in healing trauma and addiction recovery, Laurie focuses on treating the cyclical root causes of compulsive behaviors while building self-love and resiliency. For more than two decades, Laurie has been working with clients who suffer from physical addictions to various substances and psychological dependence such as codependence, love addiction, anger, distorted eating behaviors, and untreated toxic stress.
Laurie draws from her love of the natural world, ancient wisdom traditions, therapeutic healing modalities, her personal life experience, and the inspiration of her two children to guide her in helping youth, adults, couples, and families overcome adversity, embrace their innate resiliency, and cultivate joyful connections and purpose.
